Research Proposal Submission & Thesis Examination Procedures (GIT, 2024 Spring)



GIT Graduate students who are planning to defend their thesis (dissertation) this semester must follow the guidelines below and submit the required documents by the specifies deadlines.


* Research Proposal Submission


- Eligibility: Students who passed the comprehensive exams and submitted an official English test score (or submitted the letter from the previous institute (when admitted) certifying the medium of instruction in English)
- Students on a leave of absence are not allowed to submit a research proposal.

- Submission Period: 17:00 (Fri) March 15th, 2024

* Preliminary Evaluation

- Eligibility: The review will proceed only for those who submit manuscripts intended for thesis evaluation, and failure to submit within the specified deadline will result in the review being unavailable.

1. 1st Draft Submission(Thur) March 21st ~ 5:00 PM (Fri) March 29th, 2024

(1) Prior to the deadline, please print the required numbers of copies of your 1st draft (corresponding to the number of your examiners) and bring them to the UGST/GIT Office for a confirmation stamp from the Officer. (Veritas C #109 at Songdo, or Theology Hall #113 at Sinchon)

(2) Submit the "stamped" copy to your examiners. If one of your examiners resides abroad, you may forward a soft copy to him/her.

(3) Send an email containing the documents listed below to 1) your examiners, 2) gitoffice@yonsei.ac.kr (GIT Office), and 3) yspaper@yonsei.ac.kr (Yonsei Library Thesis Team):

 a. Soft copies of the thesis manuscript in both PDF and MS Word formats.

 b. A digital receipt from "Turnitin"
 c. A "Turnitin" similarity report cerifying a similarity index of less than 10%

  You MUST follow the specific thesis format [Click Here to Download] designated by Yonsei University.


2. Preliminary Defense: (Mon) April 22th ~ (Fri) April 26th, 2024 (Varies by major)
- The thesis examiners will inform the candidates the specific date and time for the examination.
- It is the candidate's responsibility to keep communicating with the thesis supervisor throughout the defense period.


* Final Evaluation

- Eligibility: Students who have passed the preliminary evaluation

*Students who did not pass the preliminary defense, or were advised to defer the final defense, will be eligible to present their thesis defense in the following semester.

1. 2nd Draft Submission: (Mon) May 20th ~ 5:00 PM (Wed) May 22nd, 2024

(1) Please bring the "REVISED" copies of your thesis manuscript to the UGST/GIT Office for a confirmation stamp from the Officer. (Veritas C #109 at Songdo, or Theology Hall #113 at Sinchon)

(2) Submit the "stamped" copy to your examiners. If one of your examiners resides abroad, you may forward a soft copy to him/her.

(3) Send an email containing the documents listed below to 1) your examiners, 2) gitoffice@yonsei.ac.kr (GIT Office), and 3) yspaper@yonsei.ac.kr (Yonsei Library Thesis Team):

a. Soft copies of the "REVISED" thesis manuscript in both PDF and MS Word formats.

b. Revisions Schedule (form attached): Students are required to detail their corrections and include the examiners' feed back.

c. An updated digital receipt from "Turnitin"
d. An updated "Turnitin" similarity report certifying a similarity index of less than 6%.

★Adherence to the specific thesis format designated by Yonsei University is mandatory.


2. Final Defense: (Mon) June 17th ~ (Fri) June 21st, 2024

- The thesis examiners will inform the candidates the specific date and time for the examination.
- It is the candidate's responsibility to keep communicating with the thesis supervisor throughout the defense      period.


* Final Thesis/Dissertation Submission

- Eligibility: Students who have passed all the thesis evaluations and are allowed to graduate.

1. Online Submission: ~ (Mon) July 8th, 2024


2. Booklet Submission: ~ (Mon) July 15th, 2024

- It is imperative to adhere to the submission deadlines for official work; failure to do so may result in your graduation being revoked or postponed, even if you have passed all evaluations. Examination processes will be conducted solely for candidates who have submitted their dissertation manuscript. Students MUST FOLLOW all guidelines and schedules established by the school to successfully complete their degrees. Should you have any questions, please contact the GIT Office.


* In case of Changing the Thesis/Dissertation Title

(IMPORTANT) Should there be a change in your thesis/dissertation title during the defense evaluations, this change must be promptly reported to the GIT Office to ensure your submission records are updated accordingly. Additionally, it is the responsibility of each student to update their personal information (e.g., English name, contact details) on the Portal. This is crucial for receiving your official degree certificate without any errors or inaccuracies.
