Abstract
Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are the birthplace of most stars in galaxies. One of thefundamental problems of star formation is its slowness and inefficiency, in the sensethat only a small fraction of a cloud's mass is turned into stars per free-fall time andover its lifetime. While energy and momentum injected by feedback from newbornmassive stars (UV radiation, winds, and supernovae) are believed to play a major role inregulating star formation in GMCs and their lifecycle, quantitative understanding of howfeedback interacts with the surrounding interstellar medium is still incomplete. In thistalk, I will present results from radiation (M)HD simulations modeling star-formingGMCs with stellar feedback. I will show how star formation efficiency and lifetime ofGMCs depend on various integrated cloud properties such as column density, turbulence level, and magnetization, and discuss the relative importance of differentfeedback mechanisms. Our finding that star formation efficiency decreases with thevirial parameter of a molecular cloud can be used to explain the observed starformation rate of the Milky Way. * Talk to be delivered in English
