Profile

Prof. Arif Babul is a University of Victoria Distinguished Professor at the University of Victoria in Victoria Canada. He did his PhD at Princeton University. Over the years, he has held a number of awards and positions, including a faculty position at NYU, NATO Science Fellow at Cambridge University, Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellow, Leverhulme Visiting Professor at Oxford and Durham Universities and University of Zurich/Pauli Center Gastprofessor. He is a theorist and worked on a range of topics, from gravitational lensing to galaxy formation. He is an expert on groups and clusters of galaxies and particularly, the physics of the circumgalactic gas surrounding large galaxies. Most recently, he has been using observations as well as state-of-the-art numerical simulations to study massive galaxies in the universe, exploring topics like how these galaxies form, the role of stellar and AGN feedback on their evolution, and especially the nature and impact of the gaseous flows into and out of these systems.
