▣ Abstract

Over the last two decades, constitutive modeling of multifunctional nanocomposites has revealed interesting and inspiring structure-to-property relationship behind the size dependent properties. Still the gap between theory and reality is attracting a combinatorial application of micromechanical and in-silico simulation approaches in designing microstructure of nanocomposites. The defects in nanocarbon such as graphene and CNTs has been one of the most challenging as well as attractive issue in nanocomposites due to its double-faced feature. In this seminar, both negative and positive aspects of some intrinsic and designed defects in graphene or CNTs are introduced in terms of the properties of defected nanocarbon and the tailored interfacial properties in nanocomposites. The rivaling effect of the defects behind the properties of nanocomposites is elucidated by addressing sequential bridging of molecular dynamics simulations and continuum micromechanics model. Finally, the role of interphase zone in improving the properties of nanocomposites and a reverse application strategy of micromechanics model to characterize the interphase around a defected nanocarbon is demonstrated.
