Title : Plasmonic Nanogap Devices for Biosensing and Spectroscopy Applications

Abstract:

Nanometer-scale gaps in metals are one of key building blocks for plasmonics and nano-optics. This talk will summarize our recent efforts to engineer ultranarrow gaps for molecular spectroscopy and optical trapping. We have developed an unconventional fabrication technique known as atomic layer lithography, enabling mass-production of vertically oriented nanogaps with critical dimensions defined by atomic layer deposition of ultrathin films. Using this method, we can create ultrahigh-aspect-ratio nanogaps for visible, infrared, and terahertz applications. With ‘super-coupling’ of mid-infrared light into nano-coax resonators, we perform high-contrast mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy of biomolecules. The capability of nanogap sensors can be enhanced by simultaneously using them to generate gradient forces for trapping molecules. With a resonant nano-coax, we push the limit of optical trapping to a single protein molecule.
