Earning Credits
  • Students must complete 9 credits of required courses to earn their degree.

    - Required courses: Qualitative Research Methodology (ANT5001), Cultural Anthropology Theory (ANT5002), and Introduction to Gender and Cultural Studies (ANT5003)
  • For master’s and doctoral students, at least 21 of the 30 required credits must be completed through courses offered by this department. Students can complete the remaining credits in other departments with prior approval from their academic advisor.

  •  For integrated master’s/doctoral degree students, at least 21 credits, including those earned through mandatory courses, of the 54 required credits must be completed through courses offered by this department. Students can complete the remaining credits in other departments with prior approval from their academic advisor.

  • At least 12 credits must be completed in a specific major in order for that major to be officially acknowledged.
Master’s Degree Qualification Exam
  • In order to be eligible to take the qualification exam, students must complete 27 credits, of which 9 credits must be earned through mandatory courses, and have a valid language proficiency test score.
    ※ Students must submit proof of having obtained a TOEFL CBT score of at least 200 points, a PBT score of at least 530 points, a TOEIC score of at least 702.5 points, or a TEPS score of at least 565 points. Students who passed the English proficiency test at the time of admission must indicate that they did so in their thesis qualification exam portfolio.
  • Students must submit 1 copy of their end-of-semester paper  and a thesis research plan

Doctoral Degree Qualification Exam
  • In order to be eligible for the qualification exam, students must complete 30 credits, including 9 credits from mandatory courses, and have a valid language proficiency test score.
    ※ Students must submit proof of having obtained a TOEFL CBT score of at least 200 points, a PBT score of at least 530 points, a TOEIC score of at least 702.5 points, or a TEPS score of at least 565 points. Students who passed the English proficiency test at the time of admission must indicate that they did so in their thesis qualification exam portfolio.

  • Students must submit 1 copy of a review paper on the grades of all completed courses and literature [B2] in their specified area of interest, 1 copy of their end-of-semester paper, and a thesis research plan.
  • Take-home Exam: Doctoral degree candidates and their academic advisors must prepare a reading list related to culture and feminist theory [B3] and deliver it to the examiner(s) during the semester in which the candidates are scheduled to take their exam. The examiner(s) will present 1 or 2 questions to the candidate based on the content in the reading list. Candidates will have 48 hours to submit their answers by email to their department professors.
Integrated Master’s/Doctoral Degree Qualification Exam
  • In order to be eligible for the qualification exam, students must complete 54 credits, including 9 credits from mandatory courses, and have a valid language proficiency test score.

    ※ Students must submit proof of having obtained a TOEFL CBT score of at least 200 points, a PBT score of at least 530 points, a TOEIC score of at least 702.5 points, or a TEPS score of at least 565 points. Students who passed the English proficiency test at the time of admission must indicate that they did so in their thesis qualification exam portfolio.
