ABOUT

Dean’s Message :

Hello, my name is Jun Soo-jin, the 10th Dean of the Yonsei Graduate School of Communication & Arts. We sincerely welcome you to our homepage.

The Graduate School of Communication & Arts began under the name of the Graduate School of Visual Arts (영상대학원) in August of 2000. In 2007 we expanded and reorganized, becoming the Graduate School of Communication & Arts. As of today, 2024, we are operating five distinct majors in our master's degree program as well as three majors in our doctoral degree program. Our majors proactively encourage integrated education across all majors, emphasizing connections with arts, culture, and industrial fields. Our graduate school continues to evolve as a 21st century culture and arts convergence institution. Here, the humanities and social sciences meet where art, technology, and culture coexist. Here, scholars with a deep understanding of their fields emerge; artists filled with concepts and methodology create, and fresh concepts and technologies are given room to thrive through experimentation.

One of the most frequently mentioned concepts in educational innovation is the union of liberal arts and technology. This comes from art and technology originating from the same etymology, techne. Techne refers to ‘all activities in which humans create something according to rules and certain techniques.’ This includes activities such as painting, sculpture, and architecture that fall into the category of art, as well as the concept of technology or science. In other words, within the concept of techne, there exists knowledge of rules that create artistic experiences and the technology that delivers it to realization. At the Graduate School of Communication & Arts, students grow into future artists through true innovation via techne.

As digital technology continues to advance and Artificial General Intelligence, represented by ChatGPT, is shaking the world, the most important thing for our ethos is how we integrate these new technologies into our thinking processes attempting to gain new knowledge and creativity. When photography and later video media emerged, when technology called personal computing assumed a leading role in artistic expression, we experienced a new experience of creating artistic value through emerging technologies. Techne requires an understanding of new technologies, and, in turn, creates true innovation.

The Graduate School of Communication & Arts, located in the historical and most beautiful Seongam Hall on the Yonsei, Sinchon campus, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025.The Seongam Hall building is engraved with a shield emblem protecting the book (truth) and torch (freedom) that are included in the Yonsei University emblem, aligning with the values pursued by our graduate school. Since its inception and into the future, the Graduate School of Communication & Arts will maintain its tradition of being a leading institution for culture and art convergence education as we travel on and off the path of innovative education and research, all while rooted in the spirit of truth and freedom.

Sincere Thanks,

The Dean of the Yonsei Graduate School of Communication & Arts,

Soojin Jun
