Stratio, Inc. was founded in 2013 by four Stanford Electrical Engineering PhDs. Stratio’s core technology is low-cost, high-quality, germanium (Ge) based Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) image sensors. SWIR light is invisible to the human eye, but it is sensitive to night sky radiance, making SWIR sensors ideal for night vision applications. SWIR light is also capable of penetrating objects to capture sub-surface images and of seeing through fog and smoke. These unique characteristics make SWIR sensors ideal for a variety of applications, including food inspection, hyperspectral imaging, industrial sorting, search and rescue operations, medical sensing, and automotive vision systems.

 Stratio’s germanium-based sensor utilizes a proprietary structure that allows it to overcome Ge’s innate dark current and noise limitations. It also enables Stratio to address problems with industry standard SWIR sensors; Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs) sensors are prohibitively expensive and unsuitable for mobile use due to their bulk and high power consumption. Stratio’s sensor is smaller and has a power consumption of <100mW, making it ideal for mobile use. Additionally, Stratio’s sensor functions over a wider wavelength range (0.35μm ~ 1.7μm) than InGaAs sensors (practical limit of 0.9μm ~ 1.7μm). Even with these superior features, Stratio’s sensors can be produced for approximately 100x less than InGaAs sensors.

SWIR sensing technology has been available for almost 20 years, but its expense has limited its use to the military and large corporations. Stratio’s vision is to make SWIR imaging accessible to a broad range of businesses, health care institutions, researchers, and individuals. Stratio is currently using its sensor to develop low-cost, portable hyperspectrometers for both industry and consumers, and plans to steadily increase the resolution and performance of its sensor in the future.
