An active power management control is presented to integrate a smart energy storage system (SESS) into a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind power system.  The overall system consists of a PMSG, SESS, three-phase voltage source converters (VSC), their controllers and the load. The configuration can be visualized as a micro-grid that can operate autonomously in different modes. A three-phase VSC provides the power electronics interface between the regulated dc-link bus and the three-phase load. The supervisory control algorithm determines the SESS power that should be generated according to the amount of available energy in dc-link. Also the PMSG is connected to the intermediate dc bus through another three-phase VSC. The proposed control schemes enable the wind power system integrated with SESS to operate smoothly in different modes fulfilling the operational requirement. Introducing the SESS at the dc-link bus, VSC has increased the operational flexibility, making the whole system as a sustainable and dispatchable entity. Simulation is carried out to study the control behavior of the proposed system during the sudden load change and wind speed variations. The results demonstrate the applicability of the overall operational and control architecture for integrated system.
