세미나 제목 : Exploring hidden territories of topological materials through thin film engineering.

발표초록 :

Until a decade ago, topology had been an alien concept to most condensed matter physicists and materials scientists. However, since it was found that all crystalline solids can be grouped into distinct material classes based on their band structure topologies and that metallic states are guaranteed to reside at the boundaries between different topological classes of, otherwise, insulating materials, topology has evolved into a prevailing paradigm at the core of condensed matter physics.

Despite the seemingly fast development in topological materials over the past several years, a closer look into the details of the advances reveals vast disparities between theories and experiments. These discrepancies mostly originate from the very fact that the worlds tractable to theories often differ significantly from the real worlds accessible to experiments. For example, material defects and disorders, which are mostly ignored in theories due to technical difficulties, are unavoidable in real materials. In addition, real materials are often significantly confined in one or more of their dimensions, but again such dimensional confinement is difficult to handle in topological theories and thus often ignored. Interestingly, many of these features that are ignored in the standard topological theories turn out to reveal hidden, sometimes surprising, landscapes of topological materials.

In this talk, I will discuss how thin film engineering guides us to explore these unknown territories in search of topological treasures.
