Recently, we developed a fabrication of nanostructured materials via cold plasmas. In the cold plasma, the electrons are very hot (up to 105 K) but the heavy particles remain as low as room temperature. This non-equilibrium characteristic makes cold plasma very useful for the reduction of metal ions in an easy and rapid way with the electron as the reducing agent. Argon, helium and even air can be used as the plasma generating gas for the plasma reduction. No hydrogen needed. No hazardous chemicals needed. This plasma reduction can be further enhanced by using hydrogen as the plasma generating gas with a joint effect of electrons and active hydrogen species. If no hydrogen applied, the plasma reduction can normally reduce metal ions with positive standard electrode potentials. Some progresses in the shape control and structure control have been made by using the plasma reduction. A significant advantage of the cold plasma reduction is that a site control or region control becomes possible. By this way, we can precisely and easily control the site or the area where the nano particle will be deposited. Because of the low temperature operation, the plasma reduction can be used to disperse the noble metal nanoparticles on thermal sensitive substrates like peptide, gel, water surface, cheese and others for applications like photocatalytic conversion and SERS.
