Wireless positioning services started with the use of GPS (Global Positioning System), is moving to Local Area Positioning System (LPS), and will be soon moving to Personal and Body Area Positioning Systems (BPS). Accurate indoor positioning can be applied to fields including but not limited to gaming, entertainment devices, security, robotics, bio-medical, motion-capture and home-automation. As of today, there seems to be no robust and mature solution for high precision tracking working in personal area. An efficient personal area positioning system should be able to provide real time position updates with a sub-mm level of accuracy. Popular technologies addressing this problem involve the use of camera, infrared, ultrasound and magnetic field based systems or a combination of these. All of these technologies have their own benefits and limitations.

 

This presentation will cover the development of a high-speed wireless positioning system for Personal Area Tracking (PAT) which is capable of locating the position and orientation of its sensor. The system consists of a transmitting antenna (beacon generator) and one or more sensors (receivers). The sensor module consists of a tri-axial RF field sensor, an orientation sensor, a micro-controller and a communication unit. The positioning system is designed to have low latency, high precision, high accuracy, low power and low cost with the coverage area of a typical living room making it suitable for real time Personal Area Tracking.
