세미나 제목 : Walking would be unbelievable : Design of Medical Exoskeletons for Individuals with Mobility Disorder

발표초록 :

Studies have shown that walking for as little as 30 minutes of a day improves overall health. However, more than 60,000 people in Korea and 270,000 people in the United States are paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries (SCI), and can no longer walk without support. Most SCI patients rely on wheelchairs after their injuries, and suffer from secondary injuries caused by prolonged sitting. Moreover, the patients reduced mobility often brings negative effects to their independence and social life. In this seminar, I discuss the design of Phoenix, a practical and effective exoskeleton system that enables paralyzed individuals to gain mobility and independence in their daily lives. With its minimal actuation technology, Phoenix provides 4 hours of continuous walking at a single charge. Its lightweight and modular design allows the user to put on and remove the device by himself/herself. With the platform of Phoenix, a pediatric version of Phoenix is currently being developed. This exoskeleton technology for children with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, won the first place with a $1M award at AI & Robotics for Good competition in February 2016.
