This lecture looks at the convergence of animals and language in the liminal spaces of animated cinema. In particular, it looks at the formation of a minority being in the animated bodies of beings “without language,” or animals. It seeks to ask how the discourses of animality and language, which tend in Western thought to deny animals the capacity for language, allow for the phenomenon of speaking animals in animated films. What kind of animal is an animal that talks? Are all talking animals human? Following a trajectory that moves from parables and fables to cinema and film technologies, “The Parable of Animals” explores the particular forms of expression that emerge in the intersection of animality and animation, and attempts to understand the creation of a minority animal. Are there minority animals? The essays draws from Derrida’s late work on the problem of animal language, a paradox he locates in the neologism animot, a singular-plural formation of animal being that resonates always in another language. One objective is to look at the construction of minority beings in the technological frames of animation, a technology that renders a type of animal that, far from remaining silent, talks too much. An animal constituted by excess language. The essay reads Kafka’s parables and talking animals in a variety of animated films alongside philosophical discourses on animals, while considering the relationship between language and technology, the possibility of synthetic languages and speech, and the practice of another language, a minor or minority language.

[TIF_International Forum 2008] Imagination is National Competitiveness

연세대학교 미디어아트연구소는 교육과학기술부가 기획하과 한국학술진흥재단이 주관하는 인문한국사업(Humanities Korea Project)를 수행하고 있다. 인문한국사업은 미래 한국의 ‘문화자본’이며 정신적 인프라로서의 인문학을 진흥하기 위하여 세계적인 연구소를 육성하는 국책사업이다. 이 사업의 일환으로 미디어아트연구소는 을 개최하고 있다.

TIF 2008 국제포럼은 ‘상상력이 국가경쟁력이다’라는 대명제로부터 출발하였다. 기술일변도로 진행되어온 근대문명사를 반성하고 인간과 기계, 상상력과 과학기술이 진정한 조화를 이루는 네오 르네상스를 지향하고자 한다.

21세기 디지털 문명사회에서 상상력은 이제 그것의 전통적인 영역이었던 인문학과 예술을 넘어서 과학기술, 경영, 문화산업 및 디자인 등 다양한 분야를 가루지르는 핵심 키워드가 되었다.

TIF 2008 국제포럼은 상상력을 지식통합의 도구로 파악하면서 테크놀로지, 욕망, 몸의 관계에 주목하고자 한다. 나아가 국가 신성장 동력산업으로 부상하고 있는 문화콘텐츠와 디장니의 기초로서의 상상력을 논하고자 한다.

또한 아시아문화에 나타난 상상력의 양상들을 조명함으로써 동서양을 가로지르는 상상력의 문화적 의의를 밝혀보고자 한다.

[TIF_International Forum 2009] Image and Imagination

서구의 시각중심주의는 보이는 것과 진리를 동일시한 서양의 형이상학적 전통에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 이러한 시각우월주의를 통해서 이미지는 문화의 가장 중요한 아이콘이 되었다. 후기구조주의의 이성비판과 함께 이미지는 청각, 촉각 등 다른 감각과 연계되면서 그 중심적 위치로부터 벗어나기 시작한다. 그러나 이미지문화의 주도적 역할은 아직도 유효하다. 특히 과학과 테크놀로지가 이미지생산에 개입하면서 이미지의 형태는 다변화되고 있으며 이미지는 예술을 넘어 과학, 공학, 의학 산업에 이르기까지 그 외연이 확장되고 있다.

이러한 이미지문화의 변화와 함께 비가시적인 것을 표상하는 능력으로서의 상상력의 전통적 개념은 오늘날 지식기반 정보사회에서 급격한 변화를 겪고 있다. 정보통신 혁명을 통한 미디어융합은 우리의 문명구조를 하이어라키 사회에서 홀라키(Holarchy)사회로 전환시키고 있으며 이에 따라 지식네트워크 또는 지식디자인으로서의 상상력의 새로운 개념이 형성되고 있다. TIF 2009 포럼은 이러한 문명사적 패러다임 전환 속에서 이미지와 상상력의 새로운 관계를 인문학, 예술, 과학, 문화산업을 아우르는 초학제적 관점에서 모색하고 있다.
