Research Backgrounds

Until recently society has developed at a stunning pace, and accordingly life has become more prosperous than ever before. However, such rapid social changes have resulted in various negative consequences across society, thereby causing a decline in civic virtue necessary to build a sound society, which is considered as a critical impediment to a sustainable social development as well as individuals’ wellbeing. Based on awareness of these problems, our research team has chosen “the recovery of civic virtue and healthy society” as the agenda at the medium scale step to explore solutions to restore the civic virtue of the public and seek ways to achieve a healthy society.

More specifically, we have found multiple ways to promote socially healthy behaviors both at individuals’ behavioral and just levels by integrating psychological, sociological, information scientific and cognitive neuroscientific approaches. However, there would be the limits of understanding only the trigger factors and impacts of desirable social behaviors at a personal level, considering that the encouragement of civic virtue mainly aims to promote the wellbeing and happiness of society members and build a healthy society. This suggests that it should be necessary to discover contributions or obstacles to personal health and wellbeing both at personal and social levels and deeply understand the roles those positive and negative factors play in individuals and interpersonal relationships.

Therefore, we will expand at the full scale step the approach paradigm from person to society suggested at the medium scale step and introduce a reverse paradigm from society to person to pave the way towards “individuals’ happiness by promoting social health.” In more detail, we will investigate the impacts of social support, social relationship, social activities and personal behavior necessary to foster social health on individuals’ happiness and wellbeing in multiple ways and seek solutions to relevant problems.
