AbstractThe EU's 2004 and 2007 enlargement facilitated economic integration of Eastern European countries into the global economy. This paper explores how the rise in exports from new EU member states impacts innovation among firms in non-European countries, specifically South Korea, through export competition, or competition in third countries. Utilizing a firm-level measure of export competition and patent data, this paper reveals that competition with new EU member states stimulates innovation of Korean firms, particularly through competition in markets where Korea initially led new EU member states. Moreover, the impact is heterogeneous in that high-productivity firms exhibit a stronger innovation response.
