연세대학교와 미국 University of Pennsylvania는 송도 국제화 단지 내에 공동으로 Yonsei-UPenn JGFI (Joint Genome Frontier Institute) 설립을 위한 의향서를 공식 서명하고 교환 하였다. 

University of Pennsylvania 의 Penn Genome Frontier Institute와 연세대의 게놈연구소(소장:김영준 교수-사진) 간의 공동 연구 사업은 약 4,000평의 연구 시설을 연세 송도 국제화 단지 내에 설립하는 것을 골자로 하고 있다. 연세 송도 국제화 단지는 2010년까지 30만평의 부지에 연구 및 국제화 교육을 위한 새로운 캠퍼스를 조성하는 계획을 추진하고 있으며, 단지 내에 유치되는 Yonsei-UPenn JGFI 는 BT 분야의 국제화 공동연구를 주도해 나갈 것으로 기대되고 있다. Yonsei-UPenn JGFI 는 연세대와 UPenn 대학의 연구진을 주축으로 구성되며, 유전체 기술, 유전체 기반의 치료법 및 질병 진단 마커의 공동 개발을 목적으로 하고 있다. Yonsei-UPenn JGFI 설립으로 UPenn이 보유하고 있는 최첨단의 BT 기술과 연세대의 응용 기술이 상호 시너지를 이룰 것으로 기대되며 앞으로 구축될 최신 연구시설과 더불어 BT 이행성 연구의 성공 가능성을 높여줄 국제 공동연구 발판을 마련한 것으로 보이며, 앞으로 국제 경쟁력을 가지는 연구 기술 개발 결과를 만들어 낼 것으로 기대된다.

The University of Pennsylvania and Yonsei University announce the signing of a Letter of Intent to establish a Joint Genome Frontiers Institute (JGFI) in the port city of Incheon, South Korea. This joint project between the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute (http://genomics.upenn.edu) and Yonsei Genome Institute will establish a 70,000 sq ft research and development facility within the Yonsei Songdo Global Academic Complex (http://songdo.yonsei.ac.kr). The Songdo Global Academic Complex, 160 acres of buildings targeted to open in 2010, will house a satellite campus for the Yonsei University and 300,000 sq ft of dedicated R&D facilities for information technologies and bio-technologies. The JGFI will house researchers from Yonsei and Penn with the goal of developing new genomic technologies, genome-enabled therapeutics, and genome-enabled biomarkers. The JGFI is expected to leverage genome science expertise of Penn with biotechnology and cutting edge facilities from Yonsei to provide unique opportunity for focused R&D and international collaborations.
