9월 20일 주일설교-김동호 목사 '서로 발을 씻기는 것이 옳으니라'

Ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.

John 13:12-14.

`The first place I became a senior pastor was Seungdong Church in the Pirun-dong. It was a church that was split from Seungdong Church in Insa-dong when the Presbyterian Church was divided by joint integration.

In the early days of Seungdong Church, there were two very special episodes that will remain in the history of Korean churches. I want to tell you that story today.

Episode 1.

The seventh senior pastor of Seungdong Church is Pastor Jae-hyeong Lee, and Pastor Jae-hyeong Lee was the first son of King Cheoljong's cousin, Gyeongpyeong-gun, and was the second son of Heungseon Daewon-gun, the son of King Yeongjo. When king Gojong became a king at the age of 12, he wasn't born, so he couldn't be a king.

The person who preached to Pastor Jaehyung Lee was his coachman, Gwihyeon Eom, who was the leader of the Kyungdong First Church in Junghwa-dong. I didn't believe it at first, but my wife and family first believed in Jesus and encouraged me to believe in Jesus.

Not long after believing in Jesus, a revival meeting was held at Seungdong Church, where he shares a wall with his house, where he saw Eom Young-soo, his coachman, worshiping in front of him. The words he said to his coachman Eom Young-soo while walking with his knees and steps overturned the culture and traditions of Korea over half a million years old.

What he said to his coachman at that time was 'Brother'.

It was a revolutionary thing that couldn't have happened to be called the “brother” to his coachman, who could be said to be a decent grandson, who almost became king. To the coachman who was surprised and asked what he was talking about, he said that he responded casually.

'Aren't they all brothers and sisters in Jesus? He’s older than me, so he’s an older brother.’

 Episode 2.

The first elder of Seungdong Church was Park Seong-chun.

Surprisingly, Elder Park Seong-chun was a butcher who was among the people from the lowest class at the time.

At the time, butchers were also excluded from the census, and the area of residence was limited, so they could not live anywhere. The fact that such a butcher became an elder, the leadership of the church, was not possible given the culture and traditions of the time.

In the late 19th century, when cholera broke out and many people were dying, Elder Park Seong-chun also had cholera, and Avison, a doctor of King Gojong's royal family, visited the village and treated him. It's the same as it is now, but at that time, it's really not possible, and missionary Avison's behavior was the driving force behind many people to believe in Jesus.

Park Bong-chul, the son of Elder Park Seong-chun, learned medicine from Missionary Avison at Severance and became the first Korean Western doctor as a first graduate. I'm also receiving treatment at Severance these days, but as I walk from the cancer ward toward the main building, there is a space in the corridor that displays the history of Severance with photos. Just in case I looked for it, there was a picture of Elder Park Bong-chul's son, a doctor. The name was changed to Park Seo-yang.

This was the spirit from today's scripture.

Jesus who washed the feet of his disciples.

The spirit of Jesus' words continued unabated even after 2,000 years, and became an amazing history that overturned the inhuman and anti-social culture that had been going on for 5,000 years overnight.

People like to be served rather than to serve.

The reason for studying, the reason for earning money hard to become rich, the reason for success, aren't they because they want to be served instead of serving others?

The weak serve the strong

The strong are the weak.

The poor become slaves of the rich

The rich live like slaves to the poor.

The world takes it for granted.

If it is unfair, they are told to succeed.

The wolf will live with the lamb,

the leopard will lie down with the goat,

the calf and the lion and the yearling[a] together;

and a little child will lead them.

7 The cow will feed with the bear,

their young will lie down together,

and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

8 The infant will play near the cobra’s den,

and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.

9 They will neither harm nor destroy

on all my holy mountain,

for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord

as the waters cover the sea.

(Isaiah  11:6-9) Amen.

I want to close the talk.

I think one of the best spirits that can represent Christianity is the spirit of Jesus who washed the disciples' feet.

It wasn't at first, but Christianity these days doesn't seem to be.

It seems to be becoming more and more like the world.

Do you live being served?

Do you live by serving?

The word God gives to us today is,

Ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
