Vision

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is an urgent need to nurture AI specialists around the world, including Korea. In order to meet these demands, Yonsei University established the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence in 2019 (50 students for graduate  programs (MS, PhD) per year). Then in 2021, the university established the Department of Artificial Intelligence for undergraduate students. The Department of Artificial Intelligence at Yonsei University is a relatively new department belonging to the Sinchon Campus, which recruited the first class of 20 students in 2022. The department aims to cultivate world-class experts in the field of "Artificial Intelligence," which will shape the core of  industries in the future. To this end, we provide carefully designed education programs that cover both the latest artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning, big data, computer vision, robotics, and natural language processing as well as the core computer science curriculum that includes computer programming, mathematics, algorithms, and statistics. Furthermore, the program offered by the department will play a major role in AI convergence education that will help form connections with various other departments at Yonsei University, the largest university in Korea, and help put the department as the center of AI education and research throughout the school.

Research Programs

The LE.A.P.(LEarning, Architecture, Perception) Program

To overcome the limitations of existing AI technologies, we focus our efforts developing core AI capabilities in three areas: LEarning, Architecture, and Perception. Our goal is to “Develop lightweight and efficient foundational core AI technology that cooperates with humans and uses knowledge and cognition” through offering 30 related AI courses through a specialized curriculum

■ LEarning: Advancement of foundational AI technology through research AI models and overcoming their limitations, explainable AI, and human-in-the-loop AI models.

■ Architecture: Advancement of AI computing through research on computer systems and architectures of artificial intelligence platforms for accelerating and optimizing artificial intelligence models, next-generation deep learning model accelerators, and machine learning architecture design.

■ Perception: Advancement of language/voice/visual cognitive intelligence and  of cognitive technology for AI+X convergence research through research on language/audio/video generation and improvement of comprehension skills.

The M.E.S.H.(Medicine, Engineering, financial Service, Humanity) Program

Yonsei University, as a comprehensive university, focuses on four AI+X application areas (Medicine, Engineering, financial Service, Humanity) to maximize the synergistic strengths  from delivering the strong foundation  AI applied research to the application areas. The department performs AI+X convergence research and offers AI convergence courses for all students.

■ AI+Medicine: Based on the vast medical data accumulated at the world-class Yonsei Medical Center, the department performs AI+medicine and healthcare research and education to innovate medical services and the medical industry through precision medicine and explainable clinical applications. The department collaborates with the world's top universities and medical companies such as MIT, Stanford University, and Cleveland Clinic as well as domestic startups such as InBody and Deepnoid and SMEs to pioneer new medical fields and utilize AI+medicine technology.

■ AI+Engineering: With other world-class programs within  the College of Engineering, we established a collaboration network with domestic and foreign companies and the world’s top universities and research institutions to perform various collaboration projects with our industrial partners and offer internships to develop and research AI technologies with direct applications to the engineering domain that will shape the industries of the future, such as smart factories, robots, and autonomous vehicles.

■ AI+Business: To promote research and education collaborations with Yonsei School of Business and Yonsei Graduate School of Information, the department offers AI courses around solving problems related to startups, business, and finance. Also the department researches data-based AI analysis technologies necessary for financing and operation of global financial companies such as Barclays. In particular, the department has led new businesses and startup programs through YVIP and Yonsei AI Investment Association.

■ AI+Humanities: To improve life and generate social values with AI technology, the department partners with humanities and social sciences to research ethical and legal issues around AI. To promote the social impact of AI technology, the department plans to operate programs for those who are socially underprivileged and populations vulnerable to AI technology with partnerships with public institutions such as the Seoul Metropolitan City government.

Career Paths

The demand for AI talent is rapidly increasing worldwide, and students who graduate from the Department of Artificial Intelligence can choose among various career paths. They can start businesses that utilize AI developers and researchers; they can also enter AI graduate schools to further develop mastery of the topic.
