Vision
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the College of Computing, Yonsei University was initially established in the College of Science in 1982 to nurture professionals in the field of computer science. The department moved to the College of Engineering in 1996 to reflect the diverse needs of applied studies and engineering. Recently, it was re-established within the College of Computing in 2022 according to the artificial intelligence paradigm of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and to conduct convergence research and education inside and outside the school. For more than 40 years, the department has conducted world-class research in core and applied areas, and has nurtured outstanding talents in the field of computer science. Currently, there are about 830 undergraduate students, about 200 graduate students (MS, PhD), and 24 professors. The study of computer science focuses on nurturing responsible and creative world-class experts in computer science, software, and artificial intelligence who will contribute to the nation and human development as members of societies centered around information and artificial intelligence. At the heart of the education lies the goal of promoting creative thinking along with the development of computer-related skills so that students can understand and solve real-world problems.
Research Fields
The field of computer science includes data structure and algorithm analysis, which are the basic skills for problem-solving through software, programming, and computer theory. The field of computer systems also forms the foundation of computer science and covers computer architecture, the latest GPU and multi-core architectures, and high-performance computing, as well as operating systems, system software, and compiler/programming languages that manage resources in distributed processing systems. The fields of internet and computer networks focus on the connection and configuration of platforms, 5G/6G mobile communication, and IoT research fields. Furthermore, the fields of blockchain and information security are also important fields of computer science research that ensure safe and secure communication in systems and networks. The fields of databases, big data, and data mining/text mining are core research fields and foundations of data science, important in a new data-centric society. The fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning and multi-modal artificial intelligence technology, and natural language processing technology (NLP), are at the center of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The fields of computer graphics, multimedia, and human-computer interaction (HCI) are major areas of computer science that are opening up opportunities in the new era of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality. The fields of brain computing and quantum computing are also essential future research fields for leading the new paradigm of computing.
Career Paths
Computer science is a core technology field that will play a pivotal role in the information, data, and artificial intelligence industries in the future. The need for software and artificial intelligence experts is rapidly rising not only in the field of information technology, but also across all industries, including fields related to the human society and those shaping the future societies based on cyber-technologies. For example, core algorithms and machine learning technologies are essential for autonomous vehicles; cognitive and mobility technologies are essential for the robot industry; and software and artificial intelligence technologies are essential for the healthcare industry. Currently, graduates of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering are actively contributing to various fields as faculty at universities, researchers at various computer-related research institutes, researchers and management roles at domestic/international companies (e.g., Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motors, Google, Apple, Facebook, etc.), consultants, start-up entrepreneurs (e.g., Daum Communications, Virtualtech, Socar, Vibe, etc.) public officials selected through technical government exams, and patent attorneys.
