“What can your humanoid robot do?" is probably the most common question we as roboticists have to answer when interacting with the general public. Often the question is framed in the familiar home or office environment, with implicit expectations of robust locomotion over uneven and cluttered terrain, and compliant interaction with people, objects, and the environment. In this talk, I will present the development pathway of humanoid robots, both for the safe operation of the robot and for its precise movement in unstructured environments, as well as the recent updates on TORO, the torque-controlled humanoid robot (TORO) developed by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR).
