학계에서 한류를 평가하기 시작한 2000년대 초반부터 학문 영역은 동아시아 시장을 바탕으로 유럽과 미국까지 뻗어나간 한류의 인기에 집중해 왔다. 그러나 최근 10년 동안 동남아시아 지역에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는데, 이 지정학적 지역이 세계적인 수준으로 경제 성장한 점과 동남아시아 국가 연합(ASEAN) 산하 대기업들 때문이다.한국은 연구 자료가 풍부한 다른 동시아시아 지역과의 정치적이고 경제적인 관계를 굳건히 했고 한류는 그 관계 형성의 중요한 단추가 되었다. 그러나 한류 연구가 한류에 대한 해외의 평가를 지나치게 자축하는 반면 ASEAN 지역 전체의 문화적, 경제적 다양성은 한류의 매력을 문제시하고 있다. 이번 세미나는 한류 연구가들이 마주한 장벽과 문제점에 대해 평해보는 시간을 가지고, 특히 동남아시아에 집중해서 분석해 볼 것이다. 이는 다양한 국가들간의 문화적 관계에 대한 중요한 시각을 제공하는 한편 문제시되는 이슈들을 해결하기 위해 학계가 어떤 방향성을 제시할 수 있는지 조명한다.

발표자(영문) : Dr Mary Ainslie (Associate Professor in Film & Media The University of Nottingham)

발표자 약력 : Dr. Mary J. Ainslie is an Associate Professor specializing in communications throughout Southeast Asia, with specific emphasis upon Thailand and Malaysia, as well as the wider intercultural links between the East and Southeast Asia regions. Previously Head of Film and Television studies at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus in Kuala Lumpur, she moved to the Nottingham Ningbo campus in 2017 to further film and media studies, introducing several courses and developing creative arts. She is now Deputy Head of the School of International Communications, and a recipient of the prestigious Nottingham Vice-Chancellor’s Award for her learning activities.

Mary J. Ainslie는 동남아시아 전역의 커뮤니케이션학 전공 부교수이며, 특히 태국과 말레이시아는 물론, 동아시아와 동남아시아 지역 간의 광범위한 문화 간 연계를 연구한다. 쿠알라룸푸르에 위치한 노팅엄 말레이시아 대학교 캠퍼스의 영화 및 텔레비전 학과장을 지냈으며, 2017년 노팅엄 닝보 캠퍼스로 이동해 영화와 미디어 연구를 계속 이어왔다. 그녀는 현재 국제 커뮤니케이션 학교의 부교장이고 그녀의 연구 활동으로 유명한 노팅엄 부총장 상의 수상자이다.
