- New faculty member in our department: Assistant Professor Jong Won Ma
- The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to announce that Dr. Jong Won Ma has joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the field of Smart City Infrastructure as of September 2025. Dr. Ma received his B.S. (2016) and M.S. (2018) degrees from Yonsei University, and subsequently earned his Ph.D. in Construction Engineering and Project Management (CEPM) from the University of Texas at Austin in 2022. Following his doctoral studies, he joined Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, where he offered courses in BIM, project management, surveying, and engineering management, supporting students in both academic and practical development. Dr. Ma’s primary research interests include Scan-to-BIM and digital twin technologies applying computer vision and artificial intelligence, smart cities, and digitalization for the circular economy. He is also engaged in research on Advanced Work Packaging, facility management, and disaster resilience within construction projects. Based on these research themes, he has published more than 15 papers in leading international journals such as Automation in Construction, Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, and Advanced Engineering Informatics. His notable contributions include automated Scan-to-BIM using low-cost 3D scanning, community disaster resilience perception analysis, and point-cloud–based structural monitoring of buildings. Dr. Ma is currently recruiting master’s and doctoral students to conduct research on digital twinning and construction automation using Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision. Opportunities will be available to students with strong interests in Python and deep learning libraries (PyTorch, TensorFlow), as well as those with knowledge in Building Information Modeling and Digitalization. - Dr. Ju-Hyeong Jung (academic advisor: Dr. Sang-Hyoun Kim) joined Kunsan National University
- Dr. Ju-Hyeong Jung was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering at University of Seoul in April 2023. Dr. Ju-Hyeong Jung earned a bachelor's degree and a master’s from the Technical University of Clausthal, Germany. And he earned a Ph.D degree in 2022 from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Yonsei University.

- Dr. Sang-Yeop Chung joined the CEE department
- Dr. Sang-Yeop Chung was appointed as an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Yonsei University in March 2023. Dr. Sang-Yeop Chung earned a bachelor's degree in 2007, a master's degree in 2009, and a Ph.D. degree in 2013 from the same department at Yonsei University under the supervision of Prof. Tong-Seok Han. Before joining our department, Dr. Chung worked at Technische Universität Berlin (Germany) from 2014 to 2019 and served as an assistant/associate professor at Sejong University from March 2019 to February 2023.

- Professor Joonhong Park starts his presidency for Korean Society on Water Environment and appointed as a Committe
- Professor Joonhong Park started his presidency for Korean Society on Water Environment with 40 years of history and 5,000 registered members. Korea Water Environment Society is the largest major water management society in Korea. Professor Park was appointed as a member of the 2nd Presidential Water Commission. He will serve for three years until 2025.

- Professor Jun-Haeng Heo starts his presidency for KSCE
- Professor Jun-Haeng Heo started his 55th presidency for KSCE(Korean Society of Civil Engineers) in January 13, 2022. KSCE is the largest conference in Korea. Since its foundation in 1951, KSCE has promoted the development of civil engineering and the improvement of the quality of civil engineers for over 70 years. He will lead the KSCE as the president by 2024.

- Professor Hyoungkwan Kim starts his presidency for IAARC
- Professor Hyoungkwan Kim started his presidency for IAARC (International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction) at 39th ISARC (International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction), Bogota, Columbia (July 13-15, 2022). IAARC is the premier global organization dedicated to the advancement of automation and robotics in construction. Professor Kim was awarded the prestigious Tucker-Hasegawa Award 2020 in recognition of his outstanding and continuing achievements in the fields of construction automation and robotics. He will lead the IAARC as the president for the next three years.

- Selection of R&D Project Worth 12.6 Billion Won by Research Team of Professor Sohn Hong-Gyoo
- Professor Hong-Gyoo Sohn's research team got five-year research grant from Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport for Digital National Database Technology Development Project from 2022 to 2026. He participated as principal investigator of the "Development of Automatic Change Detection and Map Composition Techniques Based on Multi-dimensional/Multi-temporal Geospatial Data for Efficient Construction of Digital National Database" project worth 12.6 billion won.

- 'Construction material and structural system laboratory for carbon sequestration' was selected as 2022 BRL
- A team of Profs. Tong-Seok Han, Kyoungsoo Park, and Yun Mook Lim at Yonsei University as well as Prof. Gun Kim at UNIST recieved funding on carbon sequestration for construction material and system for three years (2022. 6. 1. - 2025. 2.28.) from Basic Research Laboratory (BRL) program of National Research Foundation of Korea. The project will focus on the accelerated carbonation of construction materials and systems, and apply tehcnologies to not only conventional construction industies but also smart construction sectors such as 3D concrete printing. As the importance of carbon neutrality increases, the project is expected to promote the competitiveness of futuristic construction industies.
