The Hahn Young Kyo Memorial Library atH. G. Underwood Theology Hall

The Hahn Young Kyo Memorial Library (the "Hahn Library") opened in October 2010 originally as a dedicated branch library located in the Mezzanine of Theology Hall. We retained the original Theology Hall library facility, located in the Mezzanine, as a dedicated reading-room library, where our students, faculty, administrators, and guests can continue to read, study, reflect, connect, and collaborate among ourselves.

Our library is named in honor of the Rev. Dr. Young Kyo Hahn (1902-1982), a historically important Korean Christianscholar, educator, pastor, and civic leader. Dr. Hahn was Dean of our College and Graduate School from 1948 to 1957, immediately after World War II. It was during this critical period (First Republic of Korea) that much of the cornerstone was laid, not only for the modern era of our College and Yonsei University (originally founded as a Christian College), but also for the future of "Korean Theology" and Korean Christianity in general. Dr. Hahn was called to meet this historic national challenge and he admirably rose to the occasion. Before becoming Dean, Dr. Hahn accepted a rare (in that era) invitation to study in the United States in 1934, earning his bachelor's (1937) and master's (1938) degrees in theology at the world-renowned Princeton Theological Seminary; and his Th.D. degree (1944 dissertation titled "Critique of Theories of the Atonement") at the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. After retiring from Yonsei, Dr. Hahn and his family emigrated to the United States in 1958 as officially the first fraternal workers from Korea to the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, since its founding in 1789.

In 2017, Princeton Seminary honored Dr. Hahn's outstanding historical contributions to world Christianity, and Christian scholarship and education, by posthumously awarding Dr. Hahn its inaugural Heritage Award, a highest-honor reserved for those rare historical figures who best exemplify the grandtraditions, spirit, and ideals of Princeton Theological Seminary (est. 1812).

Dr. Hahn and his wife, Lee Chong Sook, are also honored in a permanent portrait-exhibit in the Korean Room at the renowned Princeton Seminary Library, which also showcases numerous museum artifacts of artistic and historical importance.
