To take the comprehensive exam, Korean students must pass the foreign language test, while international students must pass the Korean language test.

Here are the regulations related to the Korean language test that international students must follow:

1. Submission of Certified Foreign Language Scores

Both master’s and doctoral programs require international students to take the Korean language test.

If you submit the scores of a recognized certified foreign language test (TOPIK) taken during the entrance exam (special admission, transfer, general) or while enrolled, you can be exempt from the Korean language test. The recognized tests and their criteria are as follows: TOPIK: Level 6

The certified foreign language test score must have been taken within the past two years at the time of submission.

Students who have completed the master’s program at our department (those who have passed the Korean language test or submitted Korean language scores) are exempt from the foreign language test for the doctoral program. However, students who graduated from master’s programs at other universities or departments within our university must take the Korean language test (or an alternative evaluation).

Score reports and confirmation of completion of alternative courses can be submitted until the application for the comprehensive exam.

<Submission Methods>

① Submit directly to the department office with the required details (name, student ID, specific major, date of submission).

② Scan and submit score reports or confirmations to the department’s administrative e-mail (sckorean@yonsei.ac.kr).

<Submission Format>

- E-mail subject: Foreign Language Score (Name)

- Content: Student ID, name, major, program, current semester

- Both master’s and doctoral programs require submission of certified scores, completion of alternative courses, or passing an internal test to be eligible for the comprehensive exam.

2. Departmental Foreign Language/Korean Language Test

- The test is conducted in May and November (at the beginning of the semester, the test coordinator will send an e-mail regarding the foreign language test and announce the schedule later).

- International students must take the Korean language test.

-If TOPIK scores are not submitted, international students must submit scores from the Korean language test conducted by the Yonsei University Department of Korean Language and Literature during the program (passing score: 70).
