    2019 GKS Foreigner Study in Korea Scholarship Recruitment

    The Ministry of Education National Institute of International Education is recruiting students currently attending university in Korea interested in receiving a scholarship. It is the hope that many foreigner students apply.

    • 1. Objective
    • To award scholarships to foreigner students and thereby instilling a sense of motivation and achievement, encouraging a positive view on Korea, and to establish an attraction base of foreigner students

    • 2. Number of Selected Students: 200 

    • 3. Scholarship Application Details 
    •        A. 5,000,000 won (500,000won per month)
    •        B. Scholarship period: 2019 March – 2019 December (10 months)
    •        C. Scholarship payment method:
      •               1) The National Institute of International Education will award each university                    twice a year (once a semester)
    •               2) Each university will award each student the scholarship at the end of the                         month

    • 4. Application Requirements
    • The applicant must fulfill all requirements listen below
    •      A. It is impossible for an applicant to have received this scholarship twice                            already
    •      B. Applicant must be a foreigner student, second year or higher at a Korean                         university
    •               1) Holder of foreign citizenship that the university recognizes as a foreigner                         student  
      • A) In the case of transferring students, it is imperative to have studied a year (2 semesters) in a Korean university before applying
      • B) Students that do not receive academic credit grades, attending graduate school or cyber school are not allowed to apply
      • C) Students that are already receiving over 500,000won a month from the Korean government in a similar scholarship program cannot apply


           C. Must have a grade average of 80 or higher out of 100
      •      D. Must have had a grade average of 80 or higher out of 100 in the previous                           semester
      •              1) Grades are standardized to be out of 100
      •      E. Korean language proficiency (TOPIK) level needs to be 4 or higher (2-year limit              does not apply here)

      • 5. Application Documents to Submit 
      •      A. Online application
      •           1) Application system (www.studyinkorea.go.kr)
      •           2) Application period: 2019 January 29th (Tue) – February 25th (Mon)
      •           3) Application method: Sign up àApply online àPrint application àSubmit                             relevant documents to university
      •      B. Submitting application documents
      •          1) Submit documents to university during application period, and the university will decide and announce results
      •          2) National Institute of International Education will receive documents from the university: Must be submitted by 2019 March 8th (Fri) 18:00
      •      C. Application method
      •          1) Applicant must submit required documents to university
      •          2) Each university will collect applications and submit to National Institute of International Education

      •      D. List of Documents to submit
      •              1) Application form part 1 (apply online, then print)
      •              2) Passport copy
      •              3) Proof of university attendance or grade certificate (grades for an entire semester)
      •              4) TOPIK score
      •              5) Authorized language test score (if applicable)
      •              6) Self-introduction letter and academic plan (must be written in Korean in the given format)
      •              7) Letter of recommendation
      •                    A) Must be in given format, contact details to be included
      •                    B) Must include specific information about applicant
      •                    C) Must include signature and submitted to university sealed
      •              8) Other documents: 1 of each
      •                     A) Social work or awards
      •              
      • ※ Caution points
      •              1) Applicant’s name in English must match the one in passport
      •              2) Application and other related documents must be in A4 size
      •              3) Applicants may not apply directly, applications must be submitted to the university initially. 
      •              4) Grades submitted must be official
      •              5) Required documents must be submitted attached as one using a stapler, clip, etc.
      •                      - Application + passport copy + proof of admission + grades + TOPIK score + official language certificate + self-introduction letter + academic plan +            recommendation letter + other necessary documents
      •              6) Any errors in the submitted files and the applicant will be excluded
      •              7) If found that any documents submitted are false, the applicant will be excluded
      •              8) Any vacancies due to exclusion (see points vi. and vii.) and additional scholarships will be considered
      •              9) Submitted documents may not be taken back

      • 6. Selection procedure and schedule 
      •      A. Basic Selection Policies
      •              1) After recommendation from the university the National Institute of International Education will review the decision
      •              2) The applicant’s university grades, TOPIK score, self-introduction letter, academic plan, etc. will be taken into consideration along with application motive
      •      B. Standards for selection
      •              1) Quantitative Evaluation (80 points)

        •              2) Qualitative Evaluation (20 points)
        •                     A) Self-introduction letter and academic plan, recommendation letter, social work or awards, etc.
        •              3) In the scenario of applicants with the same score
        •                     A) When two applicants have the same score 1) grades 2) Korean proficiency 3) qualitative evaluation 4) other language tests will be prioritized

        •      C. Selection and scholarship payment schedule 
          • 1. 2019 scholarship student selection plan notice (National Institute of International Education à universities): January 24th (Thu)

          • 3. Submit application documents, Korean foreign studies system (SIMS) confirm recommendations: (applicant à university à National Institute of International Education): March 8th (Fri)
          • 4. National Institute of International Education special committee inspection of applications: Mid-March 
          • 5. Confirmation and notice of applicant selections (National Institute of International Education à university): End of March
          • 6. Scholarship for first semester awarded (National Institute of International Education à university): End of March
          • 7. First semester grades submitted (university à National Institute of International Education): End of August
          • 8. Calculation of first semester scholarships (University à National Institute of International Education): Mid-September 
          • 9. Second semester scholarship students selected and given notice (National Institute of International Education à university): End of September 
          • 10. Second semester scholarship awarded (National Institute of International Education à university): End of September 
          • 11. Second semester scholarship calculated (University à National Institute of International Education): 2020 Mid-January 

        • There may be changes to the schedule, applicants will be notified of selection individually through universities and ‘My page’ in the Korean Foreign Studies system
