1. Understanding of Christianity

 

YCA1101 Christianity & World Culture

A) Course Description & Goals: Modern era can be defined through globalization; global world with not borders. The essential element in drastic globalization is an adequate understanding of the world culture of the pluralistic society. Through this course, the students will be examining how Christianity, which has greatly influenced the formation of world culture, has influenced Western history and changed both society and culture as it endured the ancient, medieval, modern era as well as Religious Reform. And at the same time, examine Christianity’s own unique and separate aspects and views. In addition, the course aims to develop students of their moral character as an intellectual Christian in a diversified world through a broad understanding of world culture and history, while examining issues such as the relationship of Christianity with other religions as well as the significance of Christianity in Korean culture.

 

B) Course Style: Instructor-led lecture that includes discussions among participants.

 

 

YCA1102 Modern World and Christianity

A) Course Description & Goals: The courses aims to aid the students to have introspection of the Christian outlook and values over healthy way of living in rapidly shifting modern era. To broaden the scope of interest regarding the meaning of human life and where to find its ultimate purpose in an era of rapid globalization and informationization, this course

   i) introduces the core of Christian faith.

   ii) critically casts light upon the modern society problem by studying basic ideology of Christian.

   iii) is based on the theological relationship between nature and human, and redefines various symptoms of the crisis, especially in relation to the ecological crisis, in today's modern society.

   iv) aims to explore what the proper values and life should have for students of YONSEI University, who have a strong Christian spirit, by revealing the specific connection between the different types of human studies and the Christian spirit.

YCA1103 Bible and Christianity

This course is one of the <Understanding of Christianity>courses offered to introduce our university's founding spirit, the spirit of Christianity, to students and to foster Christian-minded talent by inheriting and developing it. It aims to introduce Christianity and make students actively review Christian values. Therefore, in this course, we take a look at the biblical records, poetry books and their contents in order to systematically understand the Bible, one of the important legacies that contains the spirit of Christianity. In particular, we examine various interests in the life and thought of Jesus, the central figure of Christianity, and ask what it means in our lives today. Simultaneously, by dealing with the problem such as the significance of Christianity in Korean culture, it fosters the sense and virtues that future leaders with Christian spirit should have. This course is especially open for Christians and students who want to get to know Christianity more vibrantly.

 

 

 

2. GLC General Education

 

GLC1109 Beginning Korean Conversation / GLC1110 Beginning Korean Comprehension / GLC1111 Beginning Korean Grammar

A) Course Description & Goals: GLC students with Korean proficiency level of either 1 or 2 must enroll in the courses above. In these courses, GLC students will develop the basic communication skills required to adapt smoothly into college life and Korean culture. 

 

B) Course Style: Instructor-led course that includes discussions and presentations.

 

 

GLC1105 Understanding Academic Discourse / GLC1106 Understanding Academic Text / GLC1107 Argumentation and Discourse / GLC1108 Logical Thinking and Writing

A) Course Description & Goals: GLC students with Korean proficiency level of either 3 or 4 must enroll in the courses above. In these courses, GLC students will develop various linguistic and academic strategies necessary to successfully carry out their studies at Korean universities.

 

B) Course Style: Instructor-led course that includes discussions and presentations.

 

 

 

GLC1201 Thinking and Expression

A) Course Description & Goals: By learning basic concepts in the humanities and social sciences, basic terms, and studying introduction of majors, General Education courses and major courses can be prepared.

GLC1206 Digital Art and Culture

A) Course Description & Goals: The class deals with many changes that have occurred in our art and culture, communication method, and the way people act and perceive in in our current time of the 4th industrial revolution. Nowadays, we are endlessly interacting in both the physical and the virtual world. One of the main communication methods in our society, culture, and art. Throughout the class, there will be many case studies and discussion in relation to how our cultural and artistic expression methods are expanding and evolving.

GLC1203 Understanding Numbers in Daily Life

A) Course Description & Goals: The course aims to introduce the basic concept and methodology of statistics.

 

 

GLC1207 Understanding Global Industry

A) Course Description & Goals: The main goal of course is for students to 1)understand the changing nature of global economy and global business management, 2)understand global industry relating to political economy, culture and international trans, 3)understand recent global industry and international trade issues, 4)increase basic knowledge on the international economy and business management world. Furthermore students will have the opportunity to study various cases in the global companies such as Apple, Google, Samsung etc. together with basic economy and management theory, and through this lecture the students will acquire basic knowledge required to major in business management, economy or international trade.

GLC1204 Guidance Politics

A) Course Description & Goals: This political science course is conducted based on key issues so that we can broaden the view of the world while living in the current global era.

GLC1208 GLC Mathematics

A) Course Description & Goals: This course covers the mathematical contents and principles required for major and minor majors in college courses, including mathematical concepts and problems, based on the contents of calculus that were taught mainly in calculation during high school. Through basic university mathematics, the ability to explore the mathematical principles of natural science and social sciences is developed. At the same time, the new mathematical concepts can be acquired via the principle of mathematics and the pioneering spirit of professional research and development is fostered.

GLC1205 Landmarks of Korean Culture

A) Course Description & Goals: This lecture is the target of understanding of Korean Cultural event. The searching for Korean Culture as events is the research of Korean culture’s perspective that cause(give rise to) culture complications and shocks. Therefore this class’s major learning courses will be to search basis causes how to reveal Korean culture’s practices, productions and values.

GLC1209 Material and Civilization

A) Course Description & Goals: The course aims to briefly look at history from prehistoric era to ancient era, then go on to examine the development accomplished with the materials and Human Civilization from the dawn of 1st Industrial Revolution to the most recent 4th. Specifically the students will have chance to thoroughly study how human civilization developed over time through the transactions between Asian(Korea/China/Japan), Mideastern(Arab) and Western(Europe). Furthermore examination on the 1st Industrial Revolution, Development of materials, the story of Jewelry, 3 remaining Industrial Revolution, and the resulting product(Silicon, semiconductor, and sensors) will be made.

GLC1210 Technology Society and Leadership

A) Course Description & Goals: Consideration of the impact made on society and role of leadership by the technological development will be made during the course.

GLC1216 Understanding of Asian Art Film

A) Course Description & Goals: Examination on the representative works of some of the renowned directors who made milestones in Asian Art Film history. Students will be looking through and studying their view of the world and image asthetics. Furthermore participants will have time to examine the the meaning of Orientalism shown on the films. 

 

B) Course Style: Appreciating  and debating over the films.
