Dr. Kim Suk-Hi

The fund’s donor, Dr. Kim Suk-Hi (김 석희. 金碩熙) is a proud alumnus of Yonsei University (Engineering 1957 and MA in Economics 1963) and professor & prominent scholar of international finance at the University of Detroit Mercy. Dr. Kim created this scholarship in 2002 to help YISS students with outstanding academic achievement in need of financial aid. Thanks to Dr. Kim, many students have received the support needed to be able to achieve their study abroad goals at Yonsei. In 1992, Dr. Kim visited Yonsei University as a Fulbright Scholar of international finance. He taught two courses at Yonsei International Summer School: International Finance in 1997 and Politics and Society of North Korea in 2010. In addition, he had previously held a variety of academic appointments here in the United States and abroad, including Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the Scott Airforce Base in the United States, and Fu Jung Catholic University in Taipei, Taiwan. He has published research monographs, college textbooks, and refereed journal articles in some top academic journals. In addition, he founded two prestigious academic journals—North Korean Review (2005-2013) and Multinational Business Review (1992–2002). In January 2013, he turned over the major editorial responsibility of North Korean Review to the Institute for North Korean Studies at Yonsei University, but he still continues to serve as the founding editor of the journal under the MOU for our creditorship. According to an article by Allen Morrison and Andrew Ipken (Journal of International Business Studies, First Quarter, 1991, pp 143-153), he was among the world’s top 25 international business researchers during the 1980s. Dr. Kim has received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2003, the Global Korea Award from Michigan State University in 2008, a 40-year service award from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2017, and a few other awards for excellence in teaching and research. He received his Ph.D. in Finance from St. Louis University, his MBA from Pepperdine University, his Master of Arts in Economics from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Soongsil University in Seoul, Korea. In addition, he studied Electrical Engineering at Yonsei University for three semesters from 1957 to 1958. Dr. Kim has served as the President of both the Korean American Finance Association (KAFA:1996) and the Korean American Economic Association (KAEA:2006). These two professional organizations—the KAFA and the KAEA—were established to the advancement of research and education on the economic-finance relations between the United States and Korea.
