Introduction to the Department of Integrated Design
The Department of Integrated Design was established in 1996 based on the College of Human Ecology’s goal of studying the interactions between humans and their environments. It was the first program in South Korea to teach integrated design to produce designers capable of creatively affecting people’s lives and cultures through design.
Department of Integrated Design
The Human Environment and Design major provides a comprehensive education about basic planning and design theories, professional design knowledge, and training in integrated design planning skills to produce designers who can creatively plan and implement designs that affect people’s lives.
Education
We focus on fostering professionals who can work in a wide variety of design fields by offering interdisciplinary education about artistic, scientific, and technological design- and integrated modeling-related concepts by teaching about product, fashion, and visual design. Our graduates are able to plan, present, and realize their visions of how to structure people’s lives and cultures based on their knowledge of the humanities and design philosophy. In today’s world, design is about more than planning and producing products. It creates value, is part of living cultures, and is at the heart of social, cultural, and industrial innovation. The design education that integrates human and environmental perspectives that the Department of Human Environment and Design offers reflects these contemporary values. The undergraduate program is centered on giving students practical, foundational skills while the graduate program is focused on research. Through the curricula of both of these programs, students can deepen their knowledge of integrated design.
Career After Graduation
Our graduates can enter the fields of product and interaction design, fashion design, and visual design as product designers, UX/UI designers, fashion designers, VMDs, MDs, display designers, fashion information planners, fashion magazine editors, journalists, furniture designers, lifestyle product designers, fashion accessory designers, fashion stylists, color designers, editorial designers, web designers, design coordinators, design strategy analysts, design planners, design directors, and trend analysts. Through design-related contests held here in South Korea and around the world, students can develop professional connections with businesses and find opportunities to receive study-abroad scholarships.
BK21 Human Life & Innovation Design
The Human Life and Innovation Design convergence major was jointly established by the Department of Child and Family Studies, which promotes human well-being at all stages of development, and the Department of Human Environment and Design, which promotes human-oriented innovation through incisive and creative problem-solving. Both of these departments have people as their common denominator. This major provides flexible multidisciplinary education underscoring convergence and specialization, teaches students how to solve social problems, and has students engage in the theory-research-practice cycle. This program was designed to produce social innovation experts who can develop sustainable solutions to social problems. In September 2020, it was designated as the 4th Stage BK21 Educational Research Group and has supported domestic and overseas research and scholarships for graduate students.
