The Department of Interior Architecture and Built Environment

The curriculum of the Department of Interior Architecture and Built Environment includes courses that teach overall planning theory to help students understand the relationships between humans and their environments, courses that teach design theories to develop students’ creativity and problem-solving abilities, and courses in which students conduct actual design projects.

Department Bylaws

  1. Of the 30 credits required to obtain a degree, 24 credits must be obtained through courses opened by this department, but the remaining 6 credits may be obtained through courses opened by other departments with the approval of an academic advisor.
  2. Students must take the Research Methodology course. However, PhD students who have taken this course during a master’s program are exempted.
  3. Graduates from other departments who enter into a master’s or doctoral program in this department must complete the undergraduate courses deemed necessary by this department in addition to the 30 credits necessary to obtain their degree.
  4. Master’s and doctoral program students must receive at least 24 credits through courses opened by this department and pass their comprehensive examination to qualify to submit a thesis or dissertation, respectively.

Qualifying Examination

Both master’s and doctoral students must take a research methodology test.

Course Descriptions

ADVANCED STATISTICS / 3 credits

The objective of this course is to study the theoretical principles in fundamental statistics in order to improve academic capability for statistical analysis in research. Topic will include various theoretical reviews in introductory and applied statistical levels. Analyses for various statistical theory and applications in problem solving will be discussed. Theoretical calculation procedures will be employed to develop appropriate applications of statistics to research in graduate levels.

RESEARCH METHOD IN HOUSING AND INTERIOR DESIGN / 3 credits

ntegrated Research Methods in Interior Architecture and Built Environment course is designed to examine the procedures and principles involved with experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, and other research.
Problem formulation, literature review, measurement issues, sampling, research design, data analysis, and report writing using APA format will be addressed. Research ethics, research quality, and research proposal development will be the main focus of this course.

RESEARCH OF SPATIAL HIERARCHY / 3 credits

Study a broad interpretation of space, including the definition of problems that can be raised about the meaning of space and the social semantics that space covers through the perspectives of various approaches.

STUDY ON INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL THEORY ON DESIGN SPACE / 3 credits

Study space concepts of interior architecture in the aspects of philosophy, fine arts and science.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE & BIM / 3 credits

In the perspective of the domain of interior architecture, this class deals with various BIM applications and case studies.

DESIGN COMPUTING RESEARCH / 3 credits

For exploring research directions and methodologies in design studies domain, this class aims to study various design computing materials facilitating advanced digital technologies.

DESIGN AND CULTURE / 3 credits

Understand why people around the world live as they do and what will be in the future.

CULTURAL ARCHITECTURE SPACE PLANNING / 3 credits

Study with specific theories and methods necessary for the space design of cultural facilities such as libraries and archive facilities, museums and exhibition facilities, and performance facilities.

FACILITY MANAGEMENT AND DESIGN / 3 credits

Study theories and practical application methods for planning, designing, and managing humanistic and functional office spaces and facility environments.

HOUSING ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE / 3 credits

Analyze environmental factors for dwelling in the relations with human and the environmental system needed in order to maintain a healthy and pleasant living environment, and perform case studies.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 1~4 / each 3 credits

Designing indoor spaces based on knowledge of theoretical learning and skills required for spatial design and project-related data and existing interior design, practice the entire process from project concept derivation and development to final three-dimensional solution presentation.

MODERN HOUSING STUDY / 3 credits

Study the design directions related with future urban housing design concepts. Analyze the historical tracks and systematically review the planning theory of the 20th century multi-family housing life. Finally analyze design trends of multi-family housing from a cultural perspective.

COMPUTER AIDED LIGHTING DESIGN / 3 credits

The objective of this class is to study lighting design and analysis theory and to cultivate an understanding of good lighting design practice through a series of design and analysis problems. Topics will include design criteria, design practice, and analysis procedures for outdoor area lighting, economic analysis of lighting systems, interior lighting design, daylighting and lighting system visualization. Commercially available computer software will be utilized and the calculation methods used in the software will be discussed.

SPATIAL PLACE MARKETING / 3 credits

In this class, various elements that make up an architectural space are taught. The design methods and principles of space based on various design marketing strategies are explained and discussed.
CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN ANALYSIS(현대공간디자인분석) 3학점 Understand modern interior design, and study its relationship with socio-cultural backgrounds.

HUMAN FACTORS IN DESIGN / 3 credits

Study physiological, sensible, ergonomically factors related to housing and interior design.

HUMAN LIBERAL ARCHITECTURE STUDY / 3 credits

Architecture is discussed and lectured from various humanistic perspectives such as healing architecture, psychological architecture, historical architecture, and organic architecture.

SMART HOME AND INDOOR ENVIRONMENT / 3 credits

Smart home, which is developing at a rapid pace with the development of IoT devices, deals with the adjustment and control of the indoor environment as an important part due to its nature. This class deals with and studies the latest issues related to smart home and indoor environment from that background.

ARCHITECTURAL ILLUMINATION SYSTEM DESIGN 1 / 3 credits

The objective of this course is to study theoretical backgrounds and principles in building illumination to expand the understanding about the specific requirements for building illumination planning. Topics will include theoretical review about planning elements for office, museum, and worship lighting. Basic electrical system design is discussed for the support of lighting planning. Theoretical calculation methods will be employed to optimize the influence of design elements for illumination in architecture.

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN ISSUES AND PRACTICES / 3 credits

This graduate level-course requires that a student has knowledge of sources of information in the important subject matter areas of their major, the ability to interpret and evaluate these sources, and the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. It is desirable for the student to comprehend the relationships between various contemporary design issues and design practices, and to integrate the complexity of issues in our society for improving their design solutions.

DESIGN ANALYSIS & PROGRAMMING / 3 credits

This course aims to educate students regarding comprehensive design process and holitic design pragramming. This course targets abandoned spaces or under utilized spaces in our communities for the sake of space-based welfare. Through the holistic design programming process, students will identify design problems and creatively seek for design solutions. In terms of course activities, students will conduct site visits and analysis, design research, concept development, schematic design, and presentations for various types of spaces. Students will improve their evidence-based design skills, knowledge in sustainability and green design and its application in actual projects, and universal design principles to accommodate various needs from different groups of people in our society.

DATA SCIENCE & APPLICATIONS / 3 credits

This course tackles multidisciplinary approaches to the interior architecture domain issues regarding datasciences including relevant research topics in database, data mining, big data, data visualizations, etc.

STUDY ON URBAN HOUSING ENVIRONMENT / 3 credits

Analyze urban habits, identifying the complex relationships of density and diversity, site fabric, and design principles.

ADVANCED STUDY IN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN / 3 credits

Review subjects & methods in the area of Environmental Design.

BEHAVIORAL THEORY FOR INTERIOR DESIGN / 3 credits

Learn theories to explain relationships between man-made interior space environment and human behaviors. Through E-B theory, enhance professional perspective on knowledge-based design in the information era.

INDOOR ENVIRONMENT FOR ELDERLY / 3 credits

Learn about elderly person's physiological and psychological characteristics, and study about indoor environment which profit to the elderly person.

HUMAN AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT / 3 credits

Humans are affected by various physiological and psychological effects from the physical environment that surrounds them. In addition, human activities taking place indoors affect the indoor environment. In this course, we study the interaction between humans and the indoor environment.

THEORY IN BUILDING ILLUMINATION / 3 credits

The goal of this course is to study the theoretical backgrounds and principles in building illumination in order to expand the understanding of lighting in architecture. Topic will include theoretical review in electric lighting and daylight for the practical applications of indoor and exterior lighting design. Analyses for the application of building illumination will be discussed. Occasionally, theoretical calculation methods will be employed to optimize the influence of lighting in architecture.

COLLABORATIVE FIELD SEMINAR 1~9 / each 1 credit

Survey recent research trends related to each student's selected research topic, and conduct presentations and discussions on these topics.

BIM-ENABLED DESIGN / 3 credits

In this class, students will be asked to deal with various BIM apps, case studies, background theories, and their applications for further design development and research.

RESEARCH IN ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING ENVIRONMENT / 3 credits

The goal of this course is to explore research methods and design in building illumination for theoretical understandings and applications of lighting environments in architecture. Topics include introduction to research methods and theory, occupants’ evaluation of visual environment, psychological effect of light to occupant, lighting control and energy analysis, daylighting, and emerging technology in building illumination. Analyses for the research of building illumination will be discussed based on research theory.

AI & INTELLIGENT DESIGN / 3 credits

This multidisciplinary class deals with so-called AI technologies and contemporary cutting-edge techs to resolve various design problems that are known as one of wicked problems.

BIOARCHITECTURE STUDY / 3 credits

The principles and examples of biophilic architectural design are introduced under the philosophy of biophilia that values life. As an approach for healing bio-architecture, the history of organic architecture and the application of biophilic design in architecture are discussed.

SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDY / 3 credits

Read the latest international research papers related to eco-friendly interior architecture and understand international research trends.

CASE STUDIES OF ACTIVE SPATIAL DESIGN / 3 credits

Understand spatial design, and study important and up-to-date issues in spatial design.

DIRECTED RESEARCH 1, 2 / each 0 credit

Start individual research on a clearly defined topic. The topic must be concluded with data collection.
