Title : Optical wireless towards multi-gigabit wireless access with physical layer security

Abstract:

The use of optical transmission over the free-space has provided high bandwidth long distance communications for many decades. Recent developments in photonics is opening up new possibilities to achieving multi-gigabit wireless transmission in indoor settings. In this talk, the optical wireless networking architecture for personal area connectivity will be discussed. The use of optical wireless transmission with steerable diffused beams allow localisation of users as well as directed transmission at speeds exceeding 10 Gigabits per second data rates. By incorporating a chotic sequence to modulate the phase of the optical transmission along with the multiple access scheme, a highly secure networking supporting multiple users can be realised. This talk will summarise our latest experimental research and discuss emerging challenges in the development of optical wireless as a viable alternative to millimetre-wave communications.
