The power and control field studies intelligent energy systems (smart grids), next-generation energy sources, and means of transportation required by modern society by integrating the classical fields of electrical and electronic engineering such as control and power. Basic undergraduate courses related to power and control include circuit theory, signals and systems, control engineering, power electronics, digital control engineering, and power engineering.
Smart Energy Systems
Smart Energy Systems is a field of research on modern power systems, also known as smart grids. This field researches the generation, storage, transmission and substation of efficient and eco-friendly electric energy by applying information and communication technology and exploiting new materials to the traditional power system. Considering the future renewable energy sources including solar and wind power and electric vehicles, it is a promising research field that is expected to have a great impact on the future society.
To this end, we are conducting research on active/reactive power control, current harmonics elimination, and power converter control to improve system stability. In particular, MMC (Modular Multilevel Converter) has an excellent ability to generate voltage with a desired waveform and has the advantage of being applicable to high-voltage facilities, so it is being studied as a core technology for voltage-type converters. Related undergraduate courses include power systems, power electronics, and power device and control.
