Title : V2X Technologies: An Overview of Their Evolution and Open Problems
Abstract:
Automotive Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications based on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), vehicle-to-network (V2N), and vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) communications—collectively referred to as vehicle-to-everything (V2X)—constitute one of the most important application domains that 5G is envisioned to support. V2X is a key enabler for advanced vehicular technologies and applications, including advanced automotive safety applications, intelligent management of traffic, and autonomous vehicles. 5G is expected to have a profound effect on the US economy, in terms of economic performance and GDP, and V2X technologies and applications are expected to lead the way. The successful deployment of the aforementioned V2X applications will be possible only if we are able to address the difficult technical challenges that remain unaddressed. In this presentation, I will review two rival V2X technologies (i.e., DSRC and C-V2X), provide an overview of their evolutionary paths, and discuss open problems regarding coexistence of V2X and non-V2X technologies as well as security issues.
