Title : LTE Networks: Performance and Security
Abstract:
In this talk, I will provide an overview of my group's research and then present my two recent research on LTE networks. The first work is on designing a fully distributed LTE downlink scheduling framework called CASTLE, which jointly optimizes the spectral efficiency of cellular networks and battery consumption for smart devices. CASTLE exploits the RSRQ and SINR as features in a machine learning algorithm to accurately estimate the cellular load at each client, and coordinates transmission between clients in a fully distributed manner. The second work is on investigating the vulnerability of the wireless emergency alert (WEA) system. In this work, we describe the details of the WEA system and develop and demonstrate the first practical spoofing attack on Presidential Alerts, using both commercially available hardware as well as modified open source software. Our results show that only four malicious portable base stations of a single Watt of transmit power each, almost all of 50,000-seat stadium can be attacked with a 90% success rate.Presenter: Sangtae Ha, Professor, CS, Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, USA
