Civil & Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Yonsei University is a comprehensive engineering discipline concerned with the planning, design, construction, and operation of the infrastructure underpinning human civilization. Its goal is to ensure the safety of physical infrastructure, protect water resources and the environment, and build future urban systems integrated with smart technology, all in service of creating a sustainable world where humans and nature coexist.

The department addresses complex modern challenges through three core systems areas. First, Infrastructure Systems covers the safety and performance of the physical structures that underpin society — structural and materials research addresses the mechanical behavior of large structures (skyscrapers, bridges, tunnels) and advanced construction materials; geotechnical engineering addresses soil and rock properties supporting structures and the remediation of contaminated ground.

Second, Water and Environmental Systems researches technologies for conserving essential water resources and clean living environments — water resources and ecology builds water management systems to respond to climate change and protects river and coastal ecosystems; environmental engineering addresses water supply and wastewater systems, waste treatment, air and water quality, and resource recovery.

Third, Information and Management Systems combines advanced information technology and management methods to maximize infrastructure efficiency — surveying and geospatial information uses satellites, drones, and sensors to acquire precise location data and develop GIS for digital twin implementation; construction management covers planning, cost, safety, and regulation throughout a project's lifecycle; smart city infrastructure integrates AI, big data, and IoT with traditional infrastructure to develop intelligent urban operation technologies.

The department leads infrastructure technologies extending beyond Earth into outer space, and upholds a commitment to public welfare in ensuring humanity's safety and convenience. Through its systematic programs, students grow into creative global professionals capable of designing a sustainable, resilient, and smart future society.
