Students entering after the fall semester in 2006 must submit their Ph.D. thesis in English (Korean abstract is needed).

Things to Know

1. Scholarship-awarded students on general admissions (special outstanding students receiving 4-semester-long scholarship)

  •  •  Newly admitted outstanding students who want to receive 4-semester scholarship should maintain a GPA of 3.7 in each semester. Scholarship is terminated if the GPA is lower than 3.7.

2. When you earn the Ph.D. (or Joint M.S./Ph.D.) degree

  •  •  Following the Section 5.1 of the Higher Education Act (announcement of Ph.D. thesis), you should report your thesis result to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology within one year.

3. Students entering from different major

  •  •  Candidate entering from different major (except some majors closely related to EE) should complete 12 supplementary credits.
  •  •  Submit the application form during the registered semester for courses following the notice.

4. English exam for M.S./Ph.D

  •  • Based on the graduate school regulation, students should submit a valid English exam result (taken within the last 2 years) before the 3rd semester (in January or July).
    •   o M.S./Ph.D. students entering before 2006: TOEFL 500, TOIEC 630, TEPS 570
    •   o Ph.D. students entering after 2006: TOEFL(CBT) 540(207), TOEIC 730, TEPS 600

* Fulfillment during the 2nd semester is recommended.

5. Graduation Examination

  •  1)  If you get a GPA (grade point average) of 3.65/4.3 on 3 (for M.S. program), 3 (for Ph.D. program), or 6 (for Joint M.S./Ph.D. program) major classes (called graduation-assessment classes hereafter), the graduation examination is waived. Graduation-assessment classes can be freely selected among the major classes taken after the date you registered for graduation examination.
    •   A)  GPA = sum of (grade point * credit) / total credits
    •   B)  Grades of the graduation-assessment classes are verified from the transcript.
    •   C)  GPA is not rounded off below the decimal point.
    •   D)  Grade point conversion table
      등급/평점표
      Grade A+ A0 A- B+ B0 B-
      Point 4.3 4.0 3.7 3.3 3.0 2.7
  •  2)  You can choose a maximum of two classes from your advising professor’s classes as graduation-assessment classes. If a Ph.D. or Joint M.S./Ph.D. program (but not M.S. program) student wishes to be approved of courses taken outside the department as graduation-assessment classes, a confirmation from graduate school committee upon review of the major relevance needs to be obtained. Individual research and research guidance are not considered as graduation-assessment class.
  •  3)  Class with grade lower than C+ cannot be considered as a graduation-assessment class. For Ph.D. program students, the same class which was taken as a M.S. student at Yonsei University cannot be considered as a graduation-assessment class.
  •  4)  Graduation examination is held at the end of every semester, but only students after the third semester (for the M.S. program), the third semester (for the Ph.D. program) or the fifth semester (for the Joint M.S./Ph.D. program) can apply for it.

- All the graduation examination policies which are described above are for students entering after March 2011. Students entering before March 2011 can choose to abide by either the old or new policy.
- Students are now required to write and submit a study plan to their advising professor at their program entry.
- If a M.S. program student does not satisfy the policies but shows a substantial proof for outstanding research ability, the graduation examination can be replaced with a presentation based on a petition from the advising professor upon approval of the graduate school committee. For the presentation evaluation, five full-time professors from the EEE School should participate, and at least one professor should be a graduate school committee member. A unanimous pass decision from the evaluators is required.

6. Ph.D. thesis study plan submission

  •  •  After passing the qualification exams (graduation examination and qualified English test) with over 30 (54 for the Joint Ph.D.) credits, a Ph.D. thesis study plan should be submitted during the 4th semester (6th semester for the Joint Ph.D.).

7. Enroll in classes

  •  •  Research guidance: (I) is for the 4th semester in the M.S. program or early graduation students and (II) is for the Ph.D. (Joint) program. You must take it before graduation, and since they are P/NP classes, GPA is not affected.
  •  •  Individual research: It is not a mandatory class. For M.S., (I), (II), (III) (6 credits), for Ph.D., (IV), (V), (VI) (6 credits) and for Joint Ph.D., (I), (II), (III), (IV) (8 credits) are available. But the credits earned do not count as major credits.
  •  •  For ‘Research guidance’ and ‘Individual research’, grade is assigned by the advising professor at the end of semester.
  •  •  ENG6060, ENG6100 or YSG6003 is mandatory for graduation (only one class is required for the M.S./Ph.D./Joint programs). If such class is taken during the M.S. program, this requirement is waived for the Ph.D. program.

※ ENG6060, ENG6100 and YSG6003 are P/NP classes.

8. Credit for major class

  •  •  For the M.S./Ph.D. programs, 30 credits are needed and for the Joint M.S./Ph.D. program, 54 credits are needed in total. Among 30/54 credits, over 21/36 credits should be achieved in your major. Also students enrolled after March 2006 can include a maximum of 6 non-major credits as major class fulfillment with acquired approval from the advising professor at the time of registration for the class.
  •  •  GPA should be over 3.00 for the conferment of degree (by following the graduate school by-laws).
  •  •  Credits earned from the individual research do not count as the major class credits.

9. Strict observance of registration deadline for academic administration

  •  •  No delayed registration is allowed, and submission of all necessary documents must be made in a timely manner.

10. Other Precautions

  •  •  Students should register personal information on the portal web-site. Timely update should be made as modifications are needed (as for phone number, bank account number, etc).
  •  •  English name on the portal web-site should be identical to the name shown on the passport.
  •  •  Industrial academic research students should not take time off without department approval (unaccounted action may result in an expel). Submitting a proof of employment to graduate school is needed each semester.
  •  •  During the time of absent leave, qualification exam cannot be taken and will not be approved.
  •  •  The students who want to extend a thesis deadline must pass the qualification exam first (that is, for M.S. program students (over 8 semesters), Ph.D. students (over 14 semesters) and Joint Ph.D. students (over 16 semesters) to extend two years).
